Session 15: Chapter Four "Waterdhavian Nights"
The lightning ripped across the night sky.
Thunder rolled.
Panicked, Crow spun around quickly taking in his surroundings. He stood in the wrecked camp that was once his home. The cold wind blew down from the top of the mountain, large drops of water splashed across his face. He could smell the dirt, the scent of the lightning, and sulfur. From behind, someone cleared their throat.
Lorcan.
Crow turned to face his patron, his benefactor. He would even go so far as to call him his chieftain. But he could never bring himself to call him his master. No one was a master of Crow.
"Congratulations! You lived this long," the cambion said through a grin. "I bet my sister you would, that arrogant tart. She thought you would have been squished under the boot of a giant by now. However, that spider did have me worried. But, you won me a handsome soul in the process. So, what does one such as yourself need such a large city as Waterdeep for? A bit out of your element aren't you?"
Crow stared at him, his newly acquired eye showing him a near star-like radiance around the fiend. Lorcan raised an eyebrow.
"Well, speak up!" Crow broke his line of sight by looking up to the sky.
"We are following a ring that..." but he stopped, cut off by Lorcan's loud laughing. He waited until Lorcan finished.
"Why is that funny?"
"You follow the Ring of Winter. Good luck with that."
Crow frowned.
"What concern of that is yours?"
Lorcan covered the ground between them instantly, disappearing and reappearing, never a muscle was moved.
"Everything you do is my concern. Do you think I run around offering up my power to just anyone? I have a reputation to maintain. I have a collection to complete. You are part of that. Don't fuck it up."
Crow glowered at him, never breaking eye contact.
"This here, this! This is why I offered power to you! You don't back down. Your body was shattered, yet your mind was intact. I saw you when you stood up to the giants. You walked out that gate and stood defiantly in front of death itself. That was the new Crow. The Crow that didn't try to hit everything with an axe. That was the Crow who had learned the power of words. That's the Crow that stands here now. That Crow is a goliath, unlike any other goliath. Unique. Collection worthy. And powerful."
With that, Hobbes was in Lorcan's hands.
"Hobbes, you old bastard. How does it feel to be back in the world again."
"Fuck you, Lorcan." The words seemed to emanate from the book. Lorcan chuckled.
"I knew you two would be a good fit." He closed his eyes and focused and placed his hand on the book. His hand and the book erupted in red flames, Hobbes' mental screams echoed through their heads. Then all was silent. Lorcan offered the book to Crow.
"You've grown. Take this. I think you will find the path this power takes you down to be an interesting one. Wisely or not, use it. Power is wasted if it's not used. And remember, Hobbes, hates cats."
Crow accepted the book. Lorcan turned, took a few steps and stopped. He addressed Crow over his shoulder.
"Forget the ring, Crow. Think about why you took this power. What does that ring have to do with Kayalithca? Find her. Kill her. Then talk to me. I have some interesting ideas, but I need you to not be distracted by vengeance. And don't take forever doing this. New collection fads start all the time. I'd hate for you not to be fashionable anymore."
+++++
Crow setup in his bed, cold sweat beaded across his forehead. Reaching over, he retrieved Hobbes from the satchel. Across the cover now was black hand, burned into the leather. Inside were more spells, but he could hardly make them out. His head was throbbing. He could sense something was different. There was something new. Focusing on it hurt. He closed his eyes and fought through the pain. Then in a flash, he saw Kayalithica charging at him. He held up his hand and releasing arcane focus and power he saw her begin to wither she fell to her knees but was still alive. Then he felt another eruption of power. This time from his hand a demon appeared before him. Large, red, winged, and fierce, it turned and attacked the withering form of the stone giant, smashing it into dust. Then it turned, focused it's attention on Crow and attacked...
Crow set up in his bed, heart racing. In the back of his head, he heard Lorcan laughing. "You have real power now, use it. Make me proud."
+++++
That was the last time Crow slept. He tried the next night and the next. Never could do it. Puzzling out bits and pieces with Hobbes, it looked like this was a new “gift” from Lorcan. Could have been worse. He didn’t really know what he would do with all those extra hours. Hobbes recommended reading and he almost laughed at that, but it made an odd kind of sense. There was a lot he needed to learn. It felt odd, but this was his life now.
Over the next few days, he studied the new rituals in the book. One was for identifying items, gleaning bits of their use and history. That could be useful. Another was for summoning a familiar. He had heard of them, but never actually seen one. Hobbes explained a few of the more common benefits of having one. However, both required bits and pieces he would need to acquire. He spent the better part of the day finding what he needed and by the next morning, he was sitting in his room staring at a coal black hawk.
He had never seen one like it before. Unlike the black feathers of a raven, there was no blue hue in the light. It was like they devoured the light. Its beak was slightly more hooked at the end and along the edges were small serrations, viciously designed. Its fiendish nature was especially apparent in its eyes. The iris was an orange that has a subtle fluctuation in brightness that gave the impression that a fire burned behind it. Instead of a black pupil, there was a black slit reminiscent of a reptile. He could feel the connection with it. At the edge of his mind, he could feel another presence. It was sharp, hot. He had never felt anything like it before. Holding out his arm, he willed it forward. It hopped onto his arm and then onto his shoulder. Crow turned his head and stared into one eye of the infernal raptor. “Your name is Ebon and you are a hunter. Let us find you quarry.”

Tomb of the Undead Beholder
We left Harshnag in the hall near where we found him and headed northeast. After passing through the terra cotta giant statues and killing the Bodak, we pushed on down another hall to a chamber with a bit of ambient light. Instead of checking for traps, Nichol just took off running with his lantern down the hall to the room. We all followd, albeit slowly. As he entered the room, we all saw a flash. This caused us to move a bit quicker to see what may be going on and to pull Nichol out of any trouble he may have gotten into. Crow as the second to the door to see what was there. Nichol was staring down a large undead beholder. Across the room was the item Ven was after, the elven hooblydoo-da-woober-smak recessed in an alcove about 20 foot off the floor.
Once evryone had gathered at the door way, the fight began. Henn shot it with her bow. Crow hit it with a fireball. Tim tried Toll the Dead. Kurg got under it and, using Misty Step, landed on it and grappled it. Everyone attacked. The next time Tim acted, he cast Banishment, and it worked. The meant that Kurg fell 30 feet to the ground, but that gave them all a one minute window to get the eleven artifact and get out. All in all, it could have gone better. Kurg climbed the wall into the alcove and got blown back out of it by a wave of force energy. Ven tried shooting it out with her bow and missed. Crow used mage hand and grabbed the artifact and floated it down, giving it to Ven. They they all ran very fast while Tim concentrated on his spell to keep the beholder at bay. They were able to get Harshnag and headed out into the heavily falling snow. Unbeknownst to all, Ven, despite Crow and Tim's mantra of "run, keep running," she stopped and doubled back. The beholder showed up and stopped, seeming to know exactly where she was. She let loose a bolt from her hiding spot and hit, angering. With this, the Nightstone Six stopped, turned, and attacked. Hit let loose her arrows, one striking. Tim, calling on the power of Pelor, struck the beast down with a Guiding Bolt, light from from the bossom of Pelor incerating the foul abomination but not before Ven was struck down. Seeing this and the poor condition of his companions, Tim calling on the holy radiance of Pelor once again cast Mass Heal, saving Ven, healing the others and let them all know they could all thank him later.
