Biography
One could say Guille de la Cruz was born into House Tharashk, but it was only barely. A bastard of black-sheep Devent d’Tharashk (and a daughter at that), Guille spent most of her early life in desperate search of acceptance. Her mother, although well meaning, busied herself with kitchen duties and pleasing the noble household. Through many trials and tribulations, Guille was finally convinced that life in Eberron held nothing for her and so, of age, she set out to make her own life outside of servitude.
Although she may have set out from Eberron full of bravado and bluster, she soon found herself cowed into a position as a barmaid in a village just to the east of the Ravenloft gates. Days and nights and years she toiled, resigned to a mundane life of labor and soaking up every bit of attention from pub patrons. On an evening, one such patron paid her the highest of attention. Bold but not arrogant, elegant but not fussy- this singularly ostentatious patron was the height of dignity and grace. When he offered her a place in his household, “and no funny stuff,” he assured, she was only too eager to agree. It didn’t take Guille too long to realize who, and what, her new master was. Though by the time he finally revealed his inhuman nature, Guille had already succumbed to the seductive promises that his kind offered. “Serve me for a year, and I will make you a Vampire”, he had said that year.. and the year after that.. and the year after that. Guille served him faithfully for a time, too long in hindsight. She cleaned his manor, sourced townsfolk for him and his friends to feed on, and disposed of the bodies afterward. In the summer of her fifteenth year as a familiar, Guille began to notice changes in her daily life. They were small things at the beginning, like expertly stoning a rat in the cellar from thirty paces away, but soon grew into undeniable natural talent. She tried to exhibit it humbly at first, but the longer her master remained unimpressed by her feats, the more discontent and audacious she grew. One evening, her exasperation reaching its apex, Guille confronted her master one last time. He denied her request yet again, even after her protestant display of skills. Anguished, she threw her meager belongings into a bag and fled the house, though not before grabbing the smallest valuable item she could manage - a black pipe that puffed clouds of skulls. With no money, no name, no benefactor, and no prospects, Guille lived on the streets for a time. Over time she realized she could use her new-found skill to claim bounties with relative ease. During these ventures, she befriended a small hare-brained goblin. Although he was simple, she noted a remarkable sophistication in his tinkerings, and thus kept him close. |
